The youth and trainee representatives are elected every two years, and we have officially been in office since June 11, 2025. The group we represent is entitled to vote. This and who can be elected is defined in the North Rhine-Westphalia State Staff Representation Act (LPVG NRW), Section 55 (1).

Youth and Trainee Representation
As Youth and Trainee Representation (“Jugend- und Auszubildendenvertretung”, JAV), we represent the rights, concerns and interests of young employees with regard to Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) as an employer.

Our Tasks
The JAV deals with all social, personnel and economic matters that directly or indirectly affect its employee groups.
We
- develop and implement measures for the integration of young people, trainees, annual interns, trainee civil servants and dual students of foreign origin
- accompany discussions with superiors on request
- support with problems and concerns in the company, with superiors or at school
- check whether applicable laws are applied and contracts are complied with
- take suggestions from our employee groups and implement qualified training
In all matters, we work closely with the RUB staff councils, take part in works council meetings and propose resolutions that affect young employees. In this way, we represent the concerns of this group and secure qualified training positions with good working conditions.

Good to Know
Do I Get Discounts as a Trainee?
As a trainee you get discounts on:
- Food / drink in the AKAFÖ establishments (e.g. canteen, Q-West, cafeterias ...)
- University sports
Discounts for university sports
If you take part in Unisport, simply bring your training contract with you to the course and send a short email to the course management beforehand. At Unifit, you can also show your contract when you buy a card and get the discount.
Discounts for food and drinks
As a RUB student, you can enjoy the same discounts as students in the AKAFÖ canteens. To do this, simply get a Q-West card – these are available in Q-West at the vending machines to the right of the cash desk. As soon as you have the card, send the card number and training contract to:

Will I be Reimbursed for Travel Expenses to the Vocational School?
If your vocational school is located outside of Bochum, you can have your travel costs (there and back) reimbursed – regardless of whether you commute daily or stay there.
The reimbursement is based on the public transport costs, even if you drive your own car. If you travel with the Deutschlandticket, simply state this in the application.
For ICE journeys, please keep the invoice and submit it with your application.

Who do I Turn to if I have Problems during my Training – for Example with Trainers?
If you have difficulties of any kind, you can approach us at any time.
Everything you tell us will remain confidential.
We discuss every step with you beforehand and only do what you want us to do. If you just need someone to listen, that's just as okay.
The important thing is that you feel safe.
Problems with Trainers
The relationship between you and your trainers is super important for a good apprenticeship. That's why we are happy to support you if you feel that rights or obligations are not being upheld.
Depending on the issue, we will involve other bodies if necessary, for example the staff council, the representative for severely disabled employees or the Equal Opportunities Office.
As a Trainee, do I have to be Available on Vacation?
You don't have to be available on vacation. This time belongs to you and is for your relaxation.
Should your vacation be disturbed, §8 BUrlG (German Federal Leave Act ) clearly points out that anything that contradicts relaxation is taboo.
Thus: Turn your cell phone off or put it on silent – your vacation belongs to you.
What Break Times Apply to me?
For adults
- From 6 hours of work: 30-minute break
- From 9 hours of work: 45-minute break
- A break must last at least 15 minutes.
- A break must be taken after 6 hours at the latest.
For minors
- After 4.5 hours: 30-minute break
- After 6 hours: 60-minute break
- The break must start after 4.5 hours at the latest.
- No one is allowed to work in the break room.
The following applies to everyone: Breaks may start no earlier than one hour after the start of work and must end no later than one hour before the end of the working day.

How to Find our Office
The FNO building is located between the University Library and the building NA and can easily be overlooked due to its location.
Directions from the U35 stop
- Cross the "Forum Nord” past the University Administration in the direction of the University Library (UB) and keep left.
- Walk past the UB on the left, but do not take the stairs down to the "Südforum” in front of the Audfimax.
- On the left you will see a small passage to the FNO building.
