Research and teaching is carried out in a total of twenty one faculties at Ruhr University Bochum. The term "Faculty" is used for the university's disciplinary institutional units. The holder of the chair, i.e. a professor, leads a team of academic staff, administrative staff, technical staff and student assistants. In some cases, thematically related chairs are organized together in institutes and departments.
