The Kim is here campaign is an offer for all people on the campus of Ruhr University Bochum who find themselves in an uncomfortable or inappropriate situation and need support to leave this situation. In such cases, the employees of the participating locations on campus are available to help you quickly and discreetly.

How it works

The question "Is Kim here?" is a code that the person seeking help can use to contact the employees at the participating locations. This lets staff know that help is needed without having to specify what has happened.

The Kim is here campaign is implemented by the Anti-Discrimination Office and the project Our Campus – together against sexism at Ruhr University Bochum in cooperation with the AKAFÖ, the University Library and other participating locations.

The campaign aims to raise awareness within the university community about the importance of treating one another with respect, to enhance the sense of safety on campus, and to complement existing services such as the accompanying service and the counselling centres.

Always make an emergency call via the control room (Leitwarte)!

If you need to make an emergency call on campus, be sure to call the control room (Leitwarte):

Depending on the type of emergency, the control room will inform the fire department or the police and, if necessary, forward you to them. The control room is available 24/7. You can also make emergency calls using the alarm buttons in the elevators.

If you want to make an emergency call from buildings outside the campus, call the fire and rescue service: 112 or the police: 110. If possible, also inform the control room about the emergency afterwards.

Ask for “Luisa” at clubs, bars, restaurants, etc.

In many locations in Bochum and other German cities, women who feel harassed or threatened have long been able to discreetly ask staff for help by using the code phrase “Is Luisa here?” Posters and stickers on site indicate that a venue is participating in this campaign, which was launched in Münster.

This raises the question: Why not take advantage of this campaign’s name recognition and bring Luisa to the RUB campus?

“Initiatives like ‘Luisa is here’ are aimed primarily at girls and women in sexist situations,” explains Nina Bartholomé. “With our campaign, we aim to create a broader, general support system suitable for a wide variety of people and situations on campus. That’s why, for example, we also opted for a gender-neutral name and bilingual public relations efforts.”

You are not alone: Nightline and Heimwegtelefon

If you’d like someone to keep you company on the phone on your way home, need to get something off your chest, or just need someone to listen, you can call Nightline Bochum or the ‘Heimwegtelefon’ – a telephone support service for your journey home.

Know your rights: Anti-discrimination directive

Ruhr University Bochum has its own anti-discrimination policy, which formulates the rights and obligations of all university members and campus guests. With this policy, it expressly points out that it does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, violence, stalking and bullying. RUB thus creates the framework conditions for ensuring that people's personal rights and their individual personal boundaries are respected and upheld in accordance with the German Basic Law.
