Ruhr University Bochum is committed to ensuring that career, science and studies are compatible with family responsibilities. The Family-friendly University Unit is responsible for the strategic development of a family-friendly university culture in academia and administration.
Emergency childcare
In cooperation with pme Familienservice, Ruhr University Bochum offers emergency childcare for all employees.
The service can be provided either in one of the family rooms on campus or at one of the 30 pme Familienservice backup facilities nationwide.
This service is available to employees with children aged zero to twelve.

Online Event on "Parental Allowance and Parental Leave" in English
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Karl Heinz Wiedemann from the Federal Office for Family Affairs and Civil Society Functions will give a presentation on the topic of “Parental Allowance and Parental Leave,” focusing on the following key points:
- General information about parental leave
- Applying for parental leave
- Working part-time during parental leave
- General information on parental allowance
- Difference between basic parental allowance and parental allowance plus
- Calculation of the parental allowance
There will be time for questions following the presentation.

Daycare is closed—where should I take my child?
Autumn is cold season. Unfortunately, daycare workers are not immune to catching a cold. Then daycare is suddenly cancelled and to make matters worse - the grandparents are on vacation...
But don’t worry: As a family-friendly university, Ruhr University Bochum looks out for its employees. Free emergency childcare is available for such situations.
Emergency Childcare with PME
This service is provided in collaboration with pme Familienservice and is available to all employees with children between the ages of zero and twelve. It can take place either in one of the family rooms on campus or, alternatively, at one of pme Familienservice’s backup facilities.
If you would like to have your child cared for on campus, please contact us by email by 2:00 p.m. the day before: familienservice@rub.de.
