Waste disposal

The RUB Waste Disposal team advises users on all waste disposal services at RUB. The team provides suitable disposal containers and organizes the proper and correct disposal of waste.

It is important that the user collects and records waste as separately as possible. Therefore, the user is required to sort the waste into the existing containers or into additional containers provided.

In principle, the waste hierarchy applies to disposal:
1. Avoidance
2. Reuse
3. Recycling
4. Other recycling
5. Disposal

Duties and responsibilities

Disposal of non-hazardous and household waste
Various collection systems are available to the user for the separate collection of non-hazardous and household-type waste. Most of this waste can be disposed of via the waste containers in the indoor waste rooms and outdoor disposal points. If required, users can request additional bins or containers from the Waste Disposal Department.

Disposal of hazardous waste - special waste
Hazardous substances must always be disposed of as special waste or hazardous waste. If the concentration of the hazardous substance or hazardous waste is not precisely known, the user must assume the realistic, highest possible concentration when classifying the hazardous waste. Diluting or mixing hazardous waste types with non-hazardous or other hazardous waste types or with other substances and materials is not permitted.

Before handing over the hazardous waste, the user must submit the completed transfer bill in duplicate. Hazardous waste shall only be handed over in closed and fully labeled special containers. The containers must not have any external contamination. After handover, the user receives a copy of the transfer bill as proof of proper disposal.

When transporting the waste to the transfer point, the user must pay attention to occupational safety. If required, a safety transport vehicle can be made available on loan.

Occupational safety must be observed on the way to the handover at the environmental waste collection table. The delivery must be organized in such a way that the handrail of the stairs to the collection table can be used safely. It is recommended that hazardous waste is delivered in small transport boxes, buckets or multi-purpose containers. Dates and handover points

  • The security containers are generally handed over every 14 days on Thursdays between 8.00 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. at the registered handover point in the user's building.

The service provider provides the security containers for the secure destruction of files and other information carriers containing personal data or confidential information. The User shall confirm the delivery or collection of containers to the Service Provider on the delivery bill. Before using the security container for the first time, a container code must be assigned using the instructions for the electronic lock and the container must be locked.

Using the registration form, the user orders the security containers, registers the full containers for collection or requests the exchange of containers. Users are informed as soon as the date for the service has been set. Two different types of bins are used. Depending on requirements, a container with a volume of 240 L or 500 L can be ordered. For very large quantities, a large 14m³ container can be set up outside the building for a short time.

E-waste (electrical and electronic waste)

Dates

Every Tuesday morning

An e-waste collection is organised at RUB every Tuesday morning. Smaller quantities of e-waste are collected by the disposal service provider; grey boxes are provided at the disposal points for this purpose. Very heavy and large e-waste appliances are placed on pallets by the employee for the disposal service provider. Users must register their e-waste with the waste disposal department by Friday afternoon. The e-waste is provided by the user on Monday afternoon. Depending on the local conditions, the e-waste can be placed near or at the external disposal points and at suitable locations close to the road. Large quantities must be disposed of in large containers, which the user requests from the Waste Disposal Department.

Notes

The user is responsible for decontaminating old appliances before disposal. The completed decontamination protocol must be sent to the Waste Disposal Department together with the registration form.

The Campus Logistics Department of Department 5 offers users the service of clearing out equipment inventory to be disposed of via the removal application.

Users are responsible for de-inventorying old equipment prior to disposal via the removal application from Department 4.

The e-waste must be free of liquids and hazardous adhesions. The liquids and hazardous adhesions are removed by the users and disposed of as hazardous waste.

Users remove removable hazardous components from the devices in order to dispose of them separately. These are, for example, batteries, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas discharge lamps, energy-saving and high-pressure lamps.

The disposal of old appliances with non-removable hazardous components must be requested separately from the waste disposal department. This applies, for example, to components containing PCBs, asbestos, mercury switches or permanently installed lithium batteries.
