Established in 1995, the University Archive preserves and records Ruhr University Bochum’s (RUB) vast historic records since the institution’s origins in the early 1960’s.

On the following pages we provide information on our work, the archival holdings as well as in-house services for university members. You may also read up on the history of Ruhr University and current university and state-wide digitalization processes, in which the University Archive is involved, among other topics.

Reference services available only by prior appointment

The University Archive does not offer regular opening times. If you'd like to visit us, it is mandatory to first send a request via e-mail containing information about your specific research interest. Further information on this topic here.

In-house Services

Apart from our archival work we offer in-house services, such as consultations on file management, storage, selection for discarding and transfer of files to the University Archive.

An Exhibition by the University Archive
On view: June, 19 2025 – End of 2025
Location: Foyer of the University Administration Building (UV)

On the day of the campus celebration of Ruhr University Bochum's 60^th anniversary on June 18, 2025 the exhibition RUB 60 – Built to change since 1965, created by the University Archive, will open. Following a small exhibition opening with invited guests, the exhibition will be open to the public from the evening of June 18 resp. June 19 until the end of the year. On view are many highlights of the last six decades of our university's history as well as a surprise exhibit, which will be unveiled during the opening event.

Mobility and Accessibility

Accessible routes to the University Archive (PDF, German)

The University Archive is located on level 4 in the building MB on campus. The building is wheelchair accessible via the central entrance (glass elevator). The north and south entrances and elevators are level access as well, although the entrance doors do not open automatically. The building provides wheelchair accessible restrooms (door width: 93 cm) on level 4 next to the north and south elevators.
