The General Equal Treatment Act governs the fundamental protection against discrimination in the workplace.

It provides comprehensive protection against discrimination “on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation” (section 1 AGG) in the workplace. In addition to the actual employment relationship, this also includes job advertisements and applications, recruitment, promotion, working conditions and termination, as well as vocational training.

Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (LGG)

The LGG NRW focuses on the equal treatment of men and women, the elimination of existing disadvantages and the compatibility of work and family life for women and men (section 1 (1) LGG):

  • Section 1 (2) LGG prohibits gender-based discrimination, which can also be expressed in language and which is to be countered by using gender-appropriate language in legislation, statutory provisions and internal and external official communication (section 4 LGG).
  • It provides for measures to support women (sections 5 to 12 LGG) and to reconcile work and family life (sections 13, 14 LGG).
