Room of Silence

The Room of Silence is a retreat open to all university members who seek respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday university life, or who wish to meditate or pray.

Students and employees who feel the need for contemplation, relaxation and would like to unwind from everyday university life will find all this in the Room of Silence.

When is the Room of Silence open?

  • The Room of Silence is currently temporarily closed.

Where is the Room of Silence?

  • Opposite Rote Bete in the Mensa building on the side of the N buildings.

This Room provides a space for spiritual needs and individual prayer, and it is also open to people who are looking for peace and quiet in order to nurture for their health and well-being.

The Dos and Don’ts in the Room of Silence

In order for the Room of Silence to become a place of contemplation for all visitors, everyone has to follow a few basic principles.

Below is a brief summary of the main points of the rules of use.

Silence and consideration

  • Please treat others in the Room of Silence with respect.
  • Please switch off any mobile phones, notebooks and other distracting devices.
  • Please refrain from working, eating, drinking or sleeping in the Room of Silence. There shouldn’t be any talk, either; quiet whispering is permitted as long as others don’t feel disturbed by it.
  • Events and collective ritual acts (including singing and making music) are not permitted. Also, it’s not allowed to put up posters or distribute flyers.
  • Please treat the Room and its furniture and equipment with care and leave it as you found it. Any problems or damage should be reported immediately to raumderstille@ruhr-uni-bochum.de

Openness and acceptance

All visitors to the Room of Silence commit to respectful, mindful and considerate interaction, the principles of gender equality and respect for all gender identities.

People can be excluded from using the Room of Silence if they violate the rules of use for the Room of Silence (PDF / website), RUB's house rules or the AKAFÖ house rules (German).

The Room of Silence is monitored by an advisory board, which will ensure the care and ongoing development of the Room. Currently, the members of the advisory board are (last reviewed: October 2022):
