Rules of Use for the Room of Silence

Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) defines itself as a cosmopolitan institution that guarantees the religious freedom of all university members and promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation. RUB explicitly recognizes the religious and ideological diversity of its members. The Room of Silence is committed to this mission statement.

§ 1 TERMS OF USE

(1) The Room of Silence is open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. (during the semester)/9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (during the semester break) to all university members who are looking for peace and relaxation, who wish to meditate or pray. If you have any questions or problems, please contact: raumderstille@ruhr-uni-bochum.de

(2) Visitors commit themselves to

  • respectful, mindful and considerate interaction; they do not engage in any form of discrimination;
  • the principles of gender equality and the full and equal participation of people of all genders;
  • refraining from anything that goes against the intended purpose of the Room of Silence;
  • treating the room and its furniture and equipment with care and to leave it clean and tidy;
  • reporting any damage immediately;
  • keeping the room unlocked and accessible at all times during the opening hours;
  • following the instructions of the staff responsible for the Room of Silence.

(3) Specifically, the following activities are not permitted:

  • eating, drinking, talking, dancing, singing, making music, sleeping, working;
  • putting up, attaching or displaying objects (putting up posters, distributing flyers, etc.);
  • blocking or obscuring the aisles and emergency exits, emergency lighting and fire extinguishing equipment;
  • any form of collective, ritual acts and gatherings.

Quiet whispering is only permitted if other visitors to the Room of Silence are not disturbed by it.

(4) Otherwise, the house rules of Ruhr University Bochum and the AKAFÖ apply.

§ 2 EXCLUSION FROM USE

(1) There is no claim to the use of the Room of Silence.

(2) Visitors may be temporarily or permanently restricted in their use of the Room of Silence or excluded from it if they

  • violate these rules of use or RUB's resp. AKAFÖ's house rules, or
  • misuse the Room of Silence for illegal activities or commit or plan illegal activities while using the Room of Silence, or
  • if Ruhr University Bochum or the AKAFÖ suffer any disadvantages with regard to the intended purpose of the Room of Silence as a result of any other unlawful conduct.

(3) Ruhr University Bochum and the AKAFÖ shall exercise their right to restrict access to the premises in equal measure.
