Tasks of the Senate

The tasks of the Senate are regulated by the NRW Higher Education Act and the Constitution of the Ruhr-Universität. These include

• confirming the election of the members of the Rectorate,
• commenting on the Rectorate's statement of accounts,
• Issuing and amending the basic regulations and other framework regulations and ordinances (statutes) of the university,
• Recommendations and statements on the draft university development plan and the target agreement in accordance with Section 6 (2) HG (in consultation with the Rectorate),
• Recommendations and opinions on the evaluation reports, the business plan, the principles of the allocation of positions and funds to the faculties, central academic institutions, central operating units, other academic institutions and medical institutions and
• the audit of the annual financial statements.

Members of the Senate

The XVII Senate of the RUBhas 25 elected members. Thirteen come from the group of professors, four each from the other three status groups: academic staff; technical and administrative staff; students.

The term of office of the student representatives is one year, the term of office of the other elected members is three years. The members of the Rectorate, the deans, the AstA chairperson, the chairpersons of the staff councils and the Equal Opportunities Officer as well as the representative of disabled people and the representative for students with disabilities and chronic illnesses participate in the Senate meetings in an advisory capacity.
