Student Monitor

The student monitor of Ruhr University Bochum consists of the study entry survey and the study progress survey, which are carried out annually.

While the study entry survey focuses on the social situation of the first-year students and the reasons for their choice of study, the study progress survey concentrates on the course of studies and the assessment of the study offers and conditions. In terms of content, the study progress survey complements the study entry survey. The data from both surveys can be combined (panel) so that changes in the course of studies can be observed.

The student monitor is an important part of the quality management of the Ruhr University Bochum. The results are integrated into the data reports for teaching reporting. The latter result in perspective agreements for the improvement of teaching between faculties and the rectorate.

Student monitor and then...?

Data from the student monitor are integrated into the data report on the teaching report. As part of the teaching report, the results are interpreted together with other data and subsequently lead to perspective agreements between faculties or central academic institutions and the rectorate. The achievement of objectives is reviewed as part of the monitoring of the university development plan.

Study entry survey

Since the 2004/2005 winter semester, Ruhr University Bochum has conducted an annual survey of newly enrolled students at the beginning of the winter semester.

The purpose of the short survey is to find out something about the students' living situation before they start their studies. In addition, the survey records the reasons and attitudes that lead to taking up a study program. The central service facilities and the faculties can thus respond specifically to the special requirements of the student body - e.g. in teaching or in student advising.

The survey is conducted among all students in their first semester at the university.

Study progress survey

The study progress survey takes place annually at the start of the winter semester. Students in their 5th semester (Bachelor, Staatsexamen) and in their 2nd semester (Master) are surveyed.

The recording of the course of studies makes it possible to find out whether and for what reasons students have changed their field of study or dropped out since enrolling. By assessing the study conditions and the study requirements, as well as by asking about the financing of studies or thoughts of dropping out, the offers at RUB and the faculties can be precisely adapted to the needs of the students.

The survey is conducted among all students in their fifth semester (Bachelor and Staatsexamen) as well as in their second semester (Master).
